The Alpha Sigma Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha The University of California, Berkeley

A local scholarship program was initiated by the Alpha Sigma Alumni Association in 2017 to honor the “Scholars, Athletes, Leaders and Gentlemen” of our chapter.

It relies on generous alums who believe in encouraging and rewarding outstanding character as demonstrated by current actives. You can contribute to these awards on our Donation Page. The awards are presented at Founder’s Day each year.

In 2017 the award was named the James Green Athlete Award ($850), recognizing the late Alpha Sigma Alum Jim Green, a football player at Cal and member of the 1959 Rose Bowl team.

In 2018 the award was named the Mike Rood Gentlemen Award ($850) in honor of the late Mike Rood who was the President the Alpha Sigma Building Association for many years and member of the 1969 pledge class. His pledge brothers donated enough monies to fund two scholarship awards in his name.

In 2019 Leader Scholarship Awards for actives presented by the Alumni Association will be given in honor of all past presidents of Alpha Sigma with special recognition of Don Kosovac ’53 for his leadership, dedication and commitment to Alpha Sigma.

In 2020 the Scholar scholarship awards were named in honor of Carl Walsh ’71, a former President of the Alpha Sigma Chapter who is a distinguished Professor of Economics, Department Chair at UC Santa Cruz and world respected author on economics.

In 2021 the Alumni funded scholarships are named the Barry Bronk Athlete Scholarships in honor of Barry Bronk ’66, a Cal Football Quarterback for two years (’67-’68), who serves on the Alpha Sigma Building Association Board of Directors and has donated countless hours overseeing projects at the Chapter House.
