Alpha Sigma Update (July 2020)
Cal Goes All Virtual For Fall
Berkeley has decided to hold all classes online to begin the fall semester. Originally plans were to offer many classes in person but those plans were scrapped as cases of coronavirus have escalated in and around the University. The Dorms will be opened but all rooms will be singles. School opens August 19th with instruction beginning August 26th. The situation is very fluid and can change moving forward.
Impact On Alpha Sigma / PIKE
The House was full with actives and renters for the summer sessions so the summer income goal was reached. As the House opens for the fall semester with the latest announcement about class offerings there may be many actives who will forgo the fall semester entirely or stay at home and save rent money. However, the situation is uncertain at the moment and many students are still deciding what to do. The Alpha Sigma Building Association has kept abreast of developments and is prepared for the possible income shortfall. Precautions are being taken to make the House a safe place to live.
The Alpha Sigma Alumni Association Update
Time to renew your membership! The Alpha Sigma Alumni membership year runs July 1 to June 30 and we are well on our way to raising $20,000 for the 2020-21 school year. We have heard from only 32 of our 586 living alumni so far but have raised $14,220 — thanks in great part to an anonymous donation of $10,000. If all alums gave at least $25 (or more) we will reach our goal. There is a tremendous need this year in helping the fraternity through a difficult period and our PIKE Chapter needs your support more than ever, especially with added expenses related to keeping the House clean and our actives healthy.
You can securely Donate Online via PayPal or credit card.
In advance of your donation, and on behalf of the Alpha Sigma Alumni Association / PiKA (U.C. Berkeley), we want to thank you for joining. It is through the support of our generous alumni that we can enrich the fraternity experience for the young men at Cal. Again, thanks for your support and Go Bears!
Plans For Building A New Annex (On Parking Lot)
Early in 2020 a new organization called Southgate Annex was formed to manage and guide the building project at 2737 Durant Avenue Berkeley. ASBA provided seed money. Studio KDA was hired as our architect and project manager. A “Use Permit” for a four unit building containing nineteen bedrooms was filed with the City of Berkeley in early June. We are currently in a waiting mode, hoping to receive “Entitlement” to build on the property in the near future.
